Ingredients

  • For the Earl Grey syrup
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 Earl Grey tea bags
  • For the French toast
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) unsalted butter, plus more as needed
  • Eight 1-inch-thick slices challah bread or good-quality white bread
